DAB Acting Governor Met the United Nations Secretary-General's Special Representative for Afghanistan
July 19, 2023- The Acting Governor of Da Afghanistan Bank, Mr. Hedayatullah Badri, met with the United Nations Secretary-General's Special Representative for Afghanistan, Roza Otunbayeva, and the delegation accompanying her. The meeting focused on cooperation in the field of Islamic microfinance institutions, the lifting of restrictions on the banking sector, and related topics.
During the meeting, Mr. Badri discussed the challenges that Afghanistan's economy has faced due to Covid-19 and sanctions on the banking sector. Mr. Badri has further detailed that despite these challenges, the banking sector of Afghanistan has been managed well, with a strong overall capital adequacy ratio and an increase in people's deposits in banks, which has had a positive effect on liquidity. DAB has supported the banks by creating a special committee to recover non-performing loans and enhance banking profitability.
Mr. Badri expressed DAB's commitment to supporting Islamic microfinance institutions and its comprehensive regulatory framework for the issuance of licenses, services, and supervision in accordance with Islamic principles. He also expressed DAB's willingness to cooperate with the United Nations and related institutions in this regard.
Ms. Otunbayeva praised the performance of Afghanistan's banking sector and the country's economic activities, despite various challenges and difficulties. She also noted the stability of the Afghani currency compared to many other global currencies. Ms. Otunbayeva expressed her willingness to cooperate in the development of the banking sector and Islamic microfinance institutions.
